Johnson & Johnson was founded in 1885 by Robert Wood Johnson after he had heard an impassioned speech by the father of antisepsis, Joseph Lister. Lister’s concern for the need for sanitary conditions during and after surgery inspired Johnson, along with two other brothers, to develop a line of ready-to-use surgical dressings which they marketed under the Johnson & Johnson name. Since its inception, the company has had four Robert Wood Johnson’s serving in senior executive positions.
